A May ski ascent of Europe's highest mountain

Introduction

For many years Elbrus and the entire northern side of the Caucasus were off limits certainly for British visitors. Thankfully the situation has improved and we can once again explore this beautiful area on skis. Our aim is to enjoy skiing on the mountain as we acclimatise, choosing the best weather day to summit.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office currently advise against "all but essential" travel to the Elbrus Region. Whilst it is now possible to obtain travel insurance for this ascent, those who choose to join our team must read the FCO advice and accept the risks associated with travelling here.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip.

Outline Itinerary

Day 1:Early morning departure from the UK. Arrive in Mineralnye Vody late evening. We will be met and taken to our hotel in Pyatigorsk.
Day 2:Transfer to base camp at Hathansu Meadow 2500m. In a snowy year we will have to skin from the road end to the camp. Heavy packs but easy skinning!
Day 3 - 10:Skiing Mt Elbrus. We will ski to various objectives on the north side of the mountain, staying at North Hut 3760m before our summit attempt. Should the conditions be good Alexey would like to show us the west side of the mountain where we can ski and acclimatise before moving round to the north side for our go for the top. This would be excellent if possible. All this is very much weather dependent but because we are on a 12 day trip we have lots of flexibility to give us the best possible chance of a successful and enjoyable summit day.
Day 11:Drive back to Pyatigorsk and visit the town.
Day 12:Transfer to Mineralnye Vody airport and fly home.
